The Sound of the Starting Line: DJ Zapmar at the Life Time Miami Marathon and Half
Event date: January 25, 2026.
On Sunday, January 25, 2026, DJ Zapmar set up at the start line of the 24th annual Life Time Miami Marathon and Half, right in front of the Kaseya Center in downtown Miami. I got there at 1 AM. It was really dark, the palm trees were glowing under the arena lights, and the street that would soon be packed with runners was still quiet, but I was so excited and full of energy to help lift up so many people from all over the world in one shot. Every big morning starts this way, with a few hours of setup that nobody sees.
Watch the start line wake up
Then the corral started to fill. By race morning, more than 18,000 runners from 49 states and 82 countries were on their way to the start. As they packed in, I kept a run of tracks all sitting at 128 BPM, including Contigo and Jamaican Bam Bam. This reel is the start line from my point of view, from the last quiet minutes to the moment the crowd came alive.
The energy in the minutes before a race is unlike anything else. Months of early mornings and long runs, all standing in one street, nervous and excited at the same time. I felt a little of that positive nervousness too, because like any human being, you want everything to go right. I had goosebumps and a little sweat from setting everything up and making sure it all looked and sounded good, but at the end of the day, it was all worth it. After all that sweat, I was very confident. It was an amazing experience, and I feel humble and blessed to be the one turning the music up for that moment and injecting a little extra energy into people right before one of the biggest challenges of their year. Every drop, every shout, every hand in the air reminded me why I love this work. The crowd was feeling it, and that is what it is all about.
The whole world on one street
This is Miami at its best. Runners from all over the world stood side by side under the palm trees, with flags from many countries flying at the start. Plenty of them shouted out their countries as the music played, and Brazil was really prominent, but every part of the world was in that crowd. Latin rhythms, EDM drops, and pure 305 classics hit differently when that many cultures are sharing one beat. Nobody needed a translation. Everyone understood the music, and you could feel the whole crowd lift together.
Family and friends showed up
The race is only half of the story. Just as loud as the runners were the families and friends lining the barricades and the steps of the Kaseya Center, phones up and banners high, shouting names and cheering for the people they love. I love you. You got this. Go, go, let's go. Being part of a morning where a whole community comes together to support each other is an honor I do not take for granted.
